Sorry for the lack of updates in recent months, I’ve been really busy working on various music projects, filled with 5am starts, endless hours computer programming and organising events. It’s been fun, but very tiring.

2011 has been a turning point for me, musically speaking. My artist manager and good friend John Connon exposed me to some great new music, which is bearing a massive influence on my production and general enthusiasm towards music. Finally electronic music excites me again. This is something I’ve wanted to happen for about 5 years; I’m going back to my roots, packing up the saxophone (well, almost) and writing electronic music.

iambic is still very much alive, but I am in no rush to release anything this year. I’ll be performing some old and new songs in London on March 17th supporting for Kontakte. The venue is Vibe Bar and you can buy tickets here.

Got a couple bits of exciting news to share! November sees the release of my two most exciting remixes to date, these are of songs by Half Seas Over and Little Dragon.

Having the opportunity to remix such great bands has been a real privilege for me, both remixes took many painstaking hours to complete but I’m definitely proud of the end results.

The Nocturnes EP consists of six songs (plus a bonus radio edit). Nocturnes brings a strong influence from Jazz music but augments it with the strings and guitars often found in modern electro-acoustic and post-rock compositions, and the electronics from more ambient based genres. Iambic hints his natural progression back to writing more electronic based music, yet achieves the organic sounds that have now become a trademark in his diverse electronic production style.

The past few months have been really hectic for me. Most of my time was taken up with finishing my final degree project, all the late nights and hard work paid off though – I ended up with a first for my degree! Now I can pretentiously add BSc onto the end of my name! Well, maybe I won’t, but I’m glad it’s all over. Thanks to everyone who has sent me messages of support and good luck over the past 3 years, it’s been really appreciated.

So let’s get onto iambic music news. I’m still working hard on my new album, I expect to get it totally completed by the end of the Summer and will aim to release it early next year. The new album is definitely a follow on from the Echos EP, but with much tighter production and stronger ideas. We’ve been playing a fair few of the songs live and they seem to go down pretty well as they’re generally more upbeat than my previous works. I’m really looking forward to sharing the tracks with you all as this album has taken by far the longest time to write!

If some of you have been following me on Twitter or Facebook, you would perhaps have noticed my announcement that I’m going to be producing Codes In The Cloud’s next LP for Erased Tapes records. I’ve been working closely with Robert Raths (Erased Tapes founder) and of course Codes In The Clouds to plan what I hope will be a pretty unique sounding record drawing influences from a wide range of styles and artists. We’re recording in September at Brighton Electric studios, should be a lot of fun! My remix of ‘Distant Street Lights’ by Codes In The Clouds will be released on their next release entitled ‘Paper Canyon Recycled’.

I’ve been doing a load of remixes recently, but (annoyingly) I can’t say who I’ve been remixing yet. Just wait and see, there will be a few surprises in store .

Info on Phalanger:
Phalanger is a system which facilitates the control of music software with hand and finger motion, with the aim of creating a fluid style of interaction that promotes musicality. The system is purely video based, requires no wearables or accessories and uses affordable and accessible technology. It employs a neural network for background segmentation, a combination of imaging techniques for frame analysis, and a support vector machine (SVM) for recognition of hand positions. System evaluation showed the SVM to reliably differentiate between eight different classes.

Despite my laptop choking a bit on my improvised set (I think it’s sadly time to upgrade the old MacBook!), Phalanger worked really well. I had it sending MIDI CC data to Ableton Live via the internal IAC driver. The software would detect my different hand gestures then would alter various parameters according to the current gesture and also the position of the gesture on the X & Y axis.

It gave me unparalleled expressive creativity in controlling parameters on my software synthesisers, it would be great to see further development in this area of MIDI controllers.
